You can make your own homemade super water for pennies! You can make it better than what you’d find at a store. And you can craft it to meet your health needs and taste preferences.
Water is my primary beverage (95%) that I drink every day. Given its vital importance to the body and its superiority over other beverages, I wanted to ensure I was getting the most benefit per sip. But I wanted to keep it simple, so I developed some objectives for my super water recipe.
My objectives for my homemade super water were to create a recipe that is…
- Fast
- Easy
- Powerful
- Inexpensive
- Tasty
- Lasting
After extensive research, I identified these ingredients.
- Purified water
- Organic green tea
- Organic hibiscus tea
- Organic fresh lemon juice & peel
- Organic fresh-cut mint leaves
I expected to come up with more, but given the extensive list of powerful health benefits for these ingredients and my objectives, I decided to keep it to these. Here are the benefits of each ingredient.

Purified Water
Since most of the recipe is water, it must be pure and healthy. It’s also important to remember that the human body is about 60% water, and major organs like the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and brain contain roughly 65–85%. So it makes sense to put the purest water we can find into our bodies.
Organic Green Tea
I was impressed by the powerful health benefits of green tea I learned about during my research. I am not aware of any single supplement that offers as extensive a range of health benefits as green tea. Here’s a list.
- Prevents and treats cancer
- Provides abundant antioxidants
- Provides abundant phytonutrients
- Prevents tooth decay
- Prevents bad breath
- Treats inflammation
- Boosts immunity
- Prevents heart disease
- Improves heart health
- Reduces bad cholesterol
- Lowers blood pressure
- Inhibits blood clots
- Protects from a stroke
- Promotes a healthy liver
- Controls blood sugar
- Helps with weight loss

- Fights off flu and colds
- Prevents and treats diabetes
- Protects the lungs from smoking
- Protects the liver from alcohol
Organic Hibiscus Tea
Another powerhouse, hibiscus tea, even exceeds green tea and many others in antioxidants. Here’s a list of health benefits.
- Provides profuse antioxidants
- Lowers blood pressure
- Lowers cholesterol
- Lowers blood fat
- Lowers blood sugar
- Strengthens liver
- Helps with weight loss
- Helps digestion
- Prevents cancer
- Acts as an antidepressant
- Provides anti-inflammatory agents
- Provides antibacterial agents
- Supports the immune system
Warning: Be sure to check with your doctor, as hibiscus tea can have unintended interactions with certain medications, such as those for blood pressure and blood sugar, by lowering them too much. Hibiscus tea can also weaken enamel and stain teeth, so it’s best to rinse your mouth with water and use a straw.
Cold Brewing
Place 1-3 individual-sized green tea bags and 1-3 hibiscus tea bags, or 1-3 loose-leaf teaspoons of each, in a clear glass container, fill with water, and refrigerate for 6-8 hours. Using an overnight schedule seems to work best.
Staying true to my frugal and efficiency-seeking ways, I only use one (1) individual green tea bag and one (1) hibiscus tea bag, and I brew them in a clear glass 7″ pot belly floral vase. I use this vase exclusively for this purpose and place a silicone coaster on the opening. Since it’s a relatively small container, the cold-brewed tea is concentrated. This allows me to pour some into my large drinking glass.
Cold Brewed versus Hot Brewed
- Cold brewing produces a smoother and sweeter taste than hot brewing.
- Cold brewing eliminates the risk of bacterial growth, unlike sun brewing.
- Cold-brewed green and hibiscus tea is just as high in antioxidants.
Decaffeinated Organic Green Tea (my choice)
When shopping for commercially decaffeinated tea, avoid those that rely on “solvent ethyl acetate” to remove the caffeine, as it also removes most of the tea’s beneficial polyphenols. The better method, called “effervescence,” uses only water and carbon dioxide, and retains 95 percent of the polyphenols.
Organic Fresh Lemon Juice & Peel
Both the lemon juice and the peel contribute to the benefits. So be sure to use both.
Here’s a list of the health benefits of lemon.
- Fights cancer
- Reduces inflammation
- Controls blood pressure
- Aids digestion
- Helps with weight loss
- Cleanses and detoxifies
- Prevents skin blemishes
- Clears skin
- Boosts the immune system
- High in vitamin C
- High in potassium
- Freshens breath
- Boosts energy
- Fights viral infections
- Regulates body pH
- Cleanses the liver
- Cleanses kidneys
Organic Fresh Cut Mint Leaves
Not only does a mint leaf add a refreshing taste to the water, but it also offers a range of benefits.
You can get a small potted mint plant at home improvement stores with garden departments, and sometimes at grocery stores. You can cut off 1-3 leaves, and it will regrow quickly.
Here’s a list of mint leaf benefits.
- Aids weight loss
- Natural stimulant
- Enhances concentration
- Relieves depression
- Prevents cancer
- Antioxidant
- Helps digestion
- Soothes stomach
- Reduces stress
- Enhances oral health
- Treats headaches
- Calms allergies
- Contains vitamins
- Contains minerals
Preparation
Use only a clear glass container. Do not use plastic, metal, or colored glass, as harmful chemicals may leach into your water.
Using a large drinking glass or another large glass container…
- Pour in about two tablespoons of cold-brewed green and hibiscus tea.
- Squeeze a fresh organic lemon slice inside the glass to release its juice.
- Drop the organic lemon peel inside the glass.
- Cut off 1-3 mint leaves, rinse them with purified water, and drop them in. Use sparingly.
- Fill the remainder with cold purified water.
Tip: Mint is potent, so add it sparingly to avoid overwhelming the water’s flavor.
Substitutions
If you want a substitute for fresh lemon and mint, use 100% organic lemon juice (not from concentrate) and organic dried mint (packaged as a spice).
***
If you’re going to drink your homemade super water while you work or play throughout the day, as I do, I strongly recommend keeping your glass covered between sips. You do not want any of the microscopic particles that are floating in the air to accumulate in your water. This would be especially true when your air conditioner, fan, or heater is on. I put a silicone coaster on top of mine. I also have one on the bottom.
What I like most about this homemade super water recipe is that each time I take a sip, I feel like I’m doing something good for my body. And it “feels” like it’s paying off. 🙂
