Small House with Large Porch

A large porch adds living space to a small house without the extra cost of buying and maintaining a larger home.

A wraparound porch would be the ultimate. It provides an abundance of additional living space and acts as a buffer zone between the house and soil, moisture, and vegetation. This reduces the chances of being invaded by molds, insects, and rodents.

The roof overhang helps keep the house cooler by reducing the amount of direct sunlight coming through windows. It also provides a zone for breezes to mix with the cooler air of the patio before it enters the house.

The only disadvantage would be reduced security since the raised porch enables easier access to windows. However, this could be remedied by selecting high-security windows for the ground level, installing a security system, and being vigilant about locking windows when appropriate.

The look of a large porch, especially a wraparound porch, is inviting and elegant. This attractive feature adds value to a small house. They can be further enhanced with lighting, ceiling fans, and lush landscaping in front of it.

Photos: The size of their internal space isn’t provided, so I am unsure if they fit my small house criteria of 400-1,000 square feet.
