Finding a small house suitable for a single person is difficult. Finding a new small house and master-planned community for singles does not yet exist. In my own “small” way, I am working on it though. 🙂
There are many advantages to owning a small house over a large one. If it’s designed for singles, the benefits are even greater because its size would likely be smaller and its features more desirable. Here are some advantages of a small house compared to a large one.
- Lower cost to buy or build.
- Lower taxes.
- Lower utility (electric, water, etc.) costs.
- Lower maintenance (upkeep) costs.
- Less paint, accessories, and furniture are needed to decorate.
- Less time to clean.
- More money and time to do other things you enjoy.
The majority of small houses I’ve found were built before the 1950s. You can still find them, but I do not consider them a smart buy unless they have been completely updated. I’d rather design one, which I’ve done, or find a newer one that closely matches my vision. Having the latest technology in today’s world is crucial.
There is one population segment where smallish homes are prevalent, and that is 55+ housing developments and communities. But again, while they are somewhat small, they are not designed for singles and are bigger than needed. If they were smaller and more efficient, they could be more affordable.
Perhaps subdivisions within a master planned community for singles could be designed around a theme that would attract different age groups and personality types.
Compromising by buying a typical “family”-style house in a “family”-oriented master-planned community doesn’t make sense. I started my singles club in such a community. I was amazed by the suspicion of and opposition to my club by a “few” members of the community civic organization. I overcame those issues, but the “family” orientation always dominated every community aspect.
The following images of small houses may give you some ideas about what you might like for yourself. I’m always looking for innovative small and tiny house designs, and these images may spark your interest in small houses for singles.
Included are older small houses, classic small houses, modern small houses, and house-like structures (e.g. pool and guesthouses) that could serve as small houses. Their size and design are the focus of this collection. The ones toward the end are the most ideal to me. Enjoy the tour. 🙂
