Valuable Friends

Have you ever made a list of the qualities that represent valuable friends to you? I’d imagine that most people have not, including me… until now.

Are these qualities obvious? Maybe. Maybe not. I believe it depends on the person and their qualities, character, and integrity. For example, a drug cartel leader’s list of qualities of valuable friends would differ radically from a drug prevention program leader’s list.

In a previous article, I wrote about worthless friends. To maintain a positive slant, I felt inspired to create a list of the qualities of valuable friends. “A useful analysis worth holding on to,” I thought. So here it is.

Here are the qualities of valuable friends.

  • Principled
  • Honest
  • Loyal
  • Dependable
  • Unselfish
  • Considerate
  • Respectful
  • Supportive
  • Positive
  • Open
  • Helpful
  • Polite
  • Strong
  • Productive
  • Contributing

Notice that the above list does “not” include these externally acquired “things.”

  • Wealthy
  • Famous
  • Powerful
  • Educated
  • Professional

A person’s conditions for friendship with them should “not” be based on what a friend can do for them. But rather what they can do for each other outside of the realm of externally acquired “things.” Internal qualities are the true measures of a friend.

Of course, we, our friends, and potential friends are not perfect. However, if this list of the qualities of valuable friends aligns with our principles and we seek friends who match it, we and they are closer to perfect than imperfect or corrupt. The choice is obvious.
